Dhubri Leads in Assam Elections with Peaceful Polling
Dhubri, May 08, 2024: The recently concluded three-phase elections in Assam witnessed an estimated 81.61 percentage turnout, marked by a commendable level of peace and order. Remarkably, no repolling was necessitated during the initial two phases, and as of now, none has been announced for the third phase.
Dhubri district emerged as the frontrunner in terms of voter turnout, recording an impressive 86.80 per cent participation. Following closely behind were Barpeta with 81.02 per cent, Kokrajhar with 80.44 per cent, and Guwahati with the lowest turnout at 75.67 per cent.
The final phase saw 47 candidates vying for electoral success, amidst a total electorate of 81,49,091 individuals, comprising 41,00,544 men, 40,48,436 women, and 111 individuals identifying as the third gender. Across 9,516 polling stations, voters exercised their franchise.
Key contenders in the electoral race include AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal and sitting Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain, alongside seasoned politicians such as eight-time Asom Gana Parishad MLA Phanibhushan Choudhury, former minister Manoranjan Talukdar of CPI(M), and Congress candidate Deep Bayan from Barpeta.
In Kokrajhar, former BTC Deputy leader Kampa Borgoyary of the Bodo Peoples’ Front faces competition from rivals United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) Joyanta Basumatary and Congress candidate Garjen Mushahry. Guwahati witnesses a direct contest between two female candidates, Bijuli Kalita Medhi of BJP and Mira Borthakur Goswami.
Notably, Dhubri boasts the highest electorate of 26,60,827, while Kokrajhar registers the lowest with 14,94,404 voters in this phase.
The initial two phases, held on April 19 and April 26 respectively, saw substantial voter turnout, with 78.25 per cent and 81.17 per cent participation rates. Collectively, these phases determined the fate of candidates contesting from constituencies such as Kaziranga, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Silchar(SC), Diphu (ST), Nagaon, and Darrang-Udalguri.
