Dhubri, February 03, 2024: In a proactive operation, the Dhubri Sadar Police Station officials successfully rescued 15 migratory ducks from an illegal trade on the night of February 02 near Aironjongla bazar area, located near Dhubri town. Sub-Inspector Rajesh Kumar led the police team, which discovered two bamboo baskets containing 15 Ruddy shelducks, scientifically known as Tadorna ferruginea. This species of migratory duck frequents the Brahmaputra River during the winter season.
The Ruddy shelduck, a common winter visitor in India, typically arrives in October and departs by April. Protected under The Wild Life (Protection) Act, these ducks thrive in large wetlands, rivers with mud flats, and shingle banks, often found in substantial numbers on lakes and reservoirs.

The police promptly seized the baskets and an E-Rickshaw utilized for transportation in the illegal trade. The rescued ducks were handed over to officials from the Dhubri Forest Division, who facilitated their release into their natural habitat early the following morning.
The Brahmaputra River serves as a vital habitat for various migratory birds, including ducks, geese, and cranes. Recognizing the indispensable role of these birds in the ecosystem, it is imperative to shield them from poaching and illegal trade. Reports suggest that migratory birds are allegedly sold in various weekly and daily markets around Dhubri, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced protection measures. As of now, the accused involved in the incident remain at large, prompting ongoing forest officials efforts for their apprehension.
