Mild Earthquake of Magnitude 4.8 Jolts Assam, Epicenter in Myanmar
Guwahati, January 24, 2025: An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 rattled various parts of Assam early on January 24, 2025. Tremors were felt in Guwahati, Tezpur, Nagaon, Mangaldoi, Barak Valley, and several other regions across the state.
The earthquake occurred at 12:53 AM, with its epicenter located in Myanmar. According to seismologists, the quake originated at a depth of 106 kilometers beneath the surface, making it a deep-focus earthquake.
Residents in Assam reported mild tremors, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Despite the depth of the quake, its impact was noticeable in several towns and cities across the region, causing brief moments of panic among the population.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in this region, as Assam lies within a seismically active zone. Experts continue to monitor seismic activity closely to assess any potential aftershocks or related risks.
