Eid ul-Fitr Celebrations in Assam to Coincide with Rest of India on April 11
Desk Report, April 10, 2024: The Central Hilal Committee, Assam, has officially announced that Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated in Assam, in alignment with the rest of the country, on April 11 (Thursday). Maulana Sheikh Fakhruddin Ahmed Kasimi and Alhaj Imdad Hussain, the president and general secretary of the Central Hilal Committee, Assam, issued a press statement confirming the date.
However, the crescent moon sighting has led to differing celebration dates across India. While several Muslims in India were unable to spot the Shawaal crescent moon on Tuesday, Jammu-Kashmir and Kerala confirmed the moon sighting today. Consequently, these two states will celebrate Eid ul-Fitr tomorrow, April 10. Similarly, Leh will also mark the festival on April 10.
In contrast, Muslims in the rest of the country will observe one more day of Ramadan fasting and celebrate Eid ul-Fitr on April 11.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which translates to “festival of breaking the fast,” is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, following the sighting of the new moon or crescent moon. It is a significant Islamic festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide. The exact date of the festival varies each year due to Islam’s reliance on a lunar calendar based on the sighting of the new moon.
