Election Commission Releases Schedule for 2024 Lok Sabha General Elections
Desk Report, March 16, 2024: In a significant announcement today, the Election Commission of India unveiled the detailed schedule for the highly anticipated 2024 Lok Sabha General Elections. Scheduled to kick off on April 19, the voting process will unfold in seven phases, with subsequent phases following on April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and concluding on June 1. The final results are expected to be revealed by June 6, with the counting of votes slated for June 4.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar revealed that an astounding 97 crore individuals are eligible to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming polls. Among this vast electorate, there are 49.7 crore male voters, 47.1 crore female voters, and notably, 48,000 transgender voters. Additionally, the electoral roll has been augmented by 1.8 crore first-time voters, marking a significant demographic shift in the electoral landscape.
Reflecting on the outcome of the previous parliamentary elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a formidable 303 seats, positioning itself for a potential third consecutive term. In contrast, the Congress party secured 52 seats, falling short of the requisite numbers to claim the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Underlining the Election Commission’s steadfast commitment to ensuring peaceful and violence-free elections, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar highlighted the minimal need for repolling witnessed in the past 11 state elections. He expressed the commission’s determination to further enhance the standards of electoral conduct.
With the recent appointment of two election commissioners, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar conveyed his confidence in the commission’s readiness to oversee what he described as “the biggest festival of Indian democracy.” With the team now assembled, the Election Commission asserts its preparedness to efficiently manage the electoral process and uphold the integrity of democratic principles.
