Fatal Land Dispute: 1 Dead, Over 12 Injured in Clash on Indo-Bangladesh Border in Dhubri District

Nandita Sarkar, Dhubri, February 06, 2024: In a tumultuous confrontation between two factions, Dewani and Matbbar, over a land dispute at Baldiaralga Char on the Indo-Bangladesh border in Dhubri district, a tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday. During this clash, one individual, Badsha Sheikh, a 50-year-old resident of Porar Char and son of Bashir Uddin, lost his life. Additionally, two individuals, Mohibul Haque (25 years old) from Baldiaralga and Aynal Haque (50 years old) from Porar Char, sustained severe injuries.

A local source disclosed heightened animosity between the Dewani and Matbbar groups. Hundreds from Kalapakani and Porar Char areas in the Dhubri district engaged in a fierce dispute over the inheritance of a khas land, comprising approximately 30 bighas of sand dunes in Baldiaralga. The conflict escalated into a warlike scenario, involving the use of sticks and sharp objects.

The clash resulted in injuries to more than ten individuals, with Mohibul Haque and Aynal Haque in critical condition. The Fakirganj Police Station has taken custody of Badsha Sheikh’s body, with plans to transfer it to Dhubri for autopsy. Despite Baldiaralga falling under the South Salmara police station’s jurisdiction, it technically belongs to the Dhubri district, straddling both Dhubri and South Salmara Mankachar districts.

Reports indicate that people residing in the char areas live in constant fear of such Dewani-Matbbar clashes, particularly related to the possession of khas land. The incident highlights the tensions and anxieties prevalent among the common populace in these areas.
