Severe Flooding Strikes Assam Following NEEPCO Dam Gate Openings
Kachua, May 29, 2024: The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) has released water from multiple dams in response to relentless rains and strong winds, triggering severe flooding across several regions in Assam. The release from the Karbi Langpi Hydroelectric Project, involving five gates, and the Khandong dam, involving seven gates, has resulted in the Borpani River swelling beyond its capacity, causing extensive damage and disruption.
The surging floodwaters have washed away the wooden bridge at Ramani Field on the Borpani River, severing a crucial traffic route for the residents of Kachua and Simaluguri. Consequently, numerous villages, including Kachua, Madhabpara, Juripar, Longjap, and Padumoni, are now submerged under the rising waters.
The situation remains dire as floodwaters continue to rise, impacting thousands of residents and causing widespread devastation. Emergency services are on high alert, and efforts are underway to provide relief and support to the affected communities.
Authorities are coordinating to manage the crisis, but the continuous rain is complicating rescue and relief operations. The focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents while assessing the full extent of the damage caused by this severe flooding.
