Tragedy in Simultola: Three Dead, Two Missing After Boat Capsizes in Goalpara
Nagarbera, July 11, 2024: In a tragic incident earlier today, a boat capsized in Simultola (Nayapara) in the Goalpara district, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and leaving two others missing. The incident occurred as villagers were returning from a cremation ceremony.
According to reports, the villagers were traversing a beel (wetland) by boat to reach the cremation ground. On their return journey, the boat sank, leading to the tragic accident. Initially, five people were reported missing. Local residents promptly launched a rescue operation, successfully recovering the bodies of Manjit Saha, Jagat Karmakar, and Sujan Malakar.
Search and rescue efforts by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Assam Police are ongoing to locate the two missing individuals, identified as Gaurang Malakar and Uday Sarkar.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the region, with the local community in mourning over the loss of life during what should have been a solemn occasion. Authorities are investigating the cause of the boat’s capsizing and are urging caution in similar future activities.
