Guwahati Police Bust ATM Card Swapping Gang in Gorchuk; 3 Members Arrested
Guwahati: In a well-coordinated operation, a team from the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD), Gorchuk Police Station, successfully dismantled an ATM card swapping gang involved in targeting elderly individuals across Guwahati. Acting on a credible tip, the police arrested three members, identified as Amirul Ali (26) and Injamumul Khan (23), both from Barpeta, along with a minor.
The police operation led to the seizure of multiple incriminating items from the suspects’ possession. Recovered items included 20 ATM cards, each with distinct user details, eight SIM cards, and an ATM swipe machine. According to the police, these items were crucial tools for the gang’s illicit activities, allowing them to quickly switch cards and make unauthorized withdrawals from their victims’ accounts.
The gang had been primarily preying on elderly individuals at ATMs, taking advantage of their lack of familiarity with digital transactions and offering to assist them. Instead, the suspects discreetly swapped the original ATM cards with others in their collection, proceeding to access funds from the victim’s accounts without their knowledge.
Local residents have expressed relief following the arrests, hopeful that such swift police action will deter similar incidents in the future.
