Guwahati Police Advisory for Diwali: Eco-Friendly Green Crackers and Safety Rules Explained

Guwahati: As Diwali approaches, the Guwahati Police have released an advisory to promote safe, responsible, and environmentally conscious celebrations. The guidelines encourage residents to follow safety precautions and use only Indian-origin “Green Crackers” to minimize environmental pollution. These Green Crackers, approved by the CSIR and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), are designed to emit lower levels of noise (110-125 decibels) and pollutants compared to conventional fireworks.

Below is a detailed breakdown of the key safety measures and restrictions issued by the authorities to ensure a joyful yet cautious celebration.

Guidelines for a Safe and Responsible Diwali

1. Green Crackers and Timings:
– Use only certified Green Crackers to minimize pollution.
– Crackers should be burst only between 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Diwali night.

2. Safety Precautions for Firework Handling:
– Store and handle fireworks with extreme care to avoid accidents.
– Always maintain a safe distance from lit crackers to prevent injuries.
– Children should be supervised by adults at all times during firework activities.
– Keep water or sand buckets nearby to extinguish unintended fires.

3. Protective Measures for Individuals:
– Use protective eyewear while handling fireworks to avoid eye injuries.
– Wear cotton clothes instead of synthetic or flammable materials to reduce the risk of burns.
– Maintain a minimum 4-meter distance from the place of cracker ignition.
– Always keep a first-aid kit handy for immediate treatment in case of injuries.

4. Additional Precautions:
– Ignite crackers only outdoors and avoid indoor spaces for safety.
– Immerse burnt crackers in water before disposal to prevent residual fire.
– Keep infants indoors and ensure windows and doors are shut to block out noise and splinters.
– Remove flammable waste stored near homes or terraces to avoid accidental fires.
– Make sure pets are comfortable by feeding them before firework activities begin.

5. Emergency Services:
– In case of emergencies, contact EMRI at 108 or fire services at 101 immediately.
– Read all instructions carefully before using fireworks to ensure safe handling.

Restrictions to Follow During Diwali 2024

The Guwahati Police have also highlighted several prohibitions to ensure safety and compliance:

– Strictly adhere to the 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM slot for bursting sound-emitting crackers.
– Avoid high-noise crackers that exceed 125 dB (A) or 145 dB (C) pk.
– Do not experiment with fireworks as this can lead to accidents.
– Indoor bursting of crackers is prohibited.
– Never light a cracker while holding it or keep your face too close while igniting.
– Children should not handle fireworks unsupervised.
– Do not use alcohol-based sanitizers before handling fireworks as they are flammable.
– Use incense sticks or sparkles to light crackers instead of open flames.
– Avoid bursting fireworks near electric poles, wires, homes, or other structures.
– Respect Silence Zones: No fireworks are allowed near hospitals, educational institutions, and courts at any time.

The Guwahati Police’s advisory underlines the importance of celebrating Diwali responsibly, with special attention to environmental consciousness and public safety. Following these guidelines and restrictions will help ensure that everyone, including children, pets, and vulnerable groups, enjoys a happy and safe Diwali.
