Guwahati Police Commissioner Enforces Sarai Act, 1867: Strict Guidelines for Hotels and Lodges
Guwahati, August 21, 2024: The Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, has enforced the Sarai Act, 1867, mandating that all hotels, lodges, home stays, and other accommodations used for sheltering travelers must be registered with the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati. The order includes specific regulations to ensure compliance and maintain public safety.
As per the order, owners and keepers of Sarais are required to:
1. Register their premises and provide details of the keepers with the police.
2. Refrain from allowing any lodgers until registration is completed.
3. Report the details of every guest to the jurisdictional police station daily.
Violations of the Sarai Act will result in penalties, which may include the closure of non-compliant Sarais. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence), Guwahati, is authorized to process all registration applications with immediate effect.
This move, based on the powers conferred by the Government of Assam, underscores the significance of maintaining security and proper regulation in the city’s hospitality sector.
