Heavy Showers Forecasted in Northeast India: IMD Issues Warning
Desk Report, March 27, 2024: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has given a heads-up about big rains coming to Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. This warning covers from Tuesday to Saturday. Some areas might even get hit with really heavy rain.
Starting Wednesday through Friday, these three states can expect some lighter to medium rain. The strange weather we’re having is because of a cyclonic circulation hovering over northeastern Assam. This is about 1.5 km up from the sea level.
In the last day, Assam got more than 10 mm of rain. That’s a big jump of 168% from the usual 3.8 mm. Arunachal Pradesh had over 17 mm (which is 159% more than usual), and Meghalaya got 20.7 mm (an impressive 340% more than usual). Even Tripura and Nagaland saw more rain than usual.

Sanjay O’Neil Shaw, a weather expert from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati, said we can expect a good amount of light to medium rain with some thunderstorms and lightning in Arunachal Pradesh. And from now till Saturday, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura might also see scattered to more widespread rain, along with the heavy rain warning.
