Hemant Soren Takes Oath as Jharkhand Chief Minister Amidst Legal Respite
Desk Report, July 04, 2024: Hemant Soren, leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), assumed office as the state’s chief minister for the third time, marking a significant political comeback following his recent release on bail in a high-profile money laundering case. Originally scheduled for July 7th, the oath-taking ceremony was unexpectedly advanced to Thursday, with Soren being the sole participant in the ceremony.
The swift rescheduling came in the wake of Soren’s meeting with Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan, where he promptly staked claim to form the government. This development follows the resignation of Champai Soren, who briefly held office as the 12th chief minister of Jharkhand following Hemant Soren’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31st.
Former Chief Minister Champai Soren remarked on the leadership transition, affirming the resilience of their alliance amidst challenging circumstances. “We are all aware of the events surrounding Hemant Soren’s resignation under duress. Today, however, our alliance stands united, and a leadership change has been effectuated with Hemant Soren assuming the mantle as the legislature party leader,” stated Champai Soren, who resigned willingly to facilitate the transition.
Hemant Soren’s return to office underscores the fluidity and strategic realignment within Jharkhand’s political landscape, set against the backdrop of ongoing legal proceedings.
