Former Minister Sum Ronghang Passes Away at 63 in Guwahati Hospital
Diphu, May 03, 2024: Sum Ronghang, the former MLA of Diphu, passed away at the age of 63 in Guwahati’s Health City Hospital. He had been unwell for some time and suffered from multiple organ failure. Born on January 1st, 1963, in Timikhola, Rajapathar, he was the son of Lt. Pok-oh Ronghang.
Sum Ronghang graduated with honors in Political Science. He began his political career with the Congress party and was elected president of the Mondal committee in 1999.
He contested and won the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Election in 2001 as a member of the Congress party. He held the position from 2001 to 2006 and from 2006 to 2011. Sum Ronghang was elected President of the Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee in 2011 and served until 2014.
In 2015, he resigned from the post of Congress president and the primary membership of Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He contested and won the Diphu MLA constituency in 2016.
Sum Ronghang served as a Sub-Inspector of the Primary Education Board, Karbi, Anglong District Council at Diphu until 1994. He then voluntarily resigned from the service and entered politics. From 2001 to 2006, he served as an Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and held portfolios like Education, Art & Cultural affairs. He became the Chief Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council for six months in 2006.
Sum Ronghang was associated with many social, cultural, sports, and religious institutions like Karbi Youth Festival, Shilpi Divas Ujyapan Samity, Rajapathar from 1989-91, President of Rabha Divas Ujyapan Samity, Rajapathar from 1989-91, President of Rajapathar Anchalik Raas Mahotsav Ujyapan Samity from 2000-14, President of Rajapathare Sports Association from 1990-95, President of Bakulia Sports Association from 2003-14, President of Governing Body of Rukasen College, Bakulia for ten years until 2015.
He was awarded the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Fellowship Award in the year 2008-09.
Sum Ronghang’s demise has been deeply mourned by Chief Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ronghang, senior Executive Member Amarsing Tisso, and other senior political leaders of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.
