Illegal Excavation Plagues Dhubri, Environmental Devastation and Inaction Continue
Dhubri: Dhubri district in Assam faces an escalating crisis of illegal excavation of natural resources. This rampant activity has not only caused severe environmental degradation but also triggered health issues due to widespread dust pollution. Despite numerous complaints from residents, the Forest Department has yet to take effective action, leading to growing frustration among the local population.
Illegal mining operations are active in several areas, including Dipurkuti, Raniganj, Udhmari, Kathaldi, Dubachari, Alamganj, Amervitta, Airanjangla, Soulmari, and Golakganj. These regions see a steady flow of vehicles, including dumpers, transporting natural resources without valid mining permits. Alarmingly, offenders exploit a single challan for multiple trips throughout the day, exacerbating the illegal activity.
Local residents have repeatedly informed Forest Department authorities about the illegal operations. However, no significant measures have been implemented to curb these activities. Many allege that the inaction suggests possible collusion between certain officials and illegal operators. This nexus, not only undermines governance but also results in significant revenue losses for the state government.
Moreover, the illegal excavation and transportation activities have worsened air quality in the affected areas. Constant movement of dumpers stirs up dust, causing respiratory issues and other health problems for nearby communities. The lack of regulation and accountability has made the situation dire, with residents demanding immediate intervention.
The ongoing exploitation of Dhubri’s natural resources threatens the ecological balance and the well-being of its residents. Urgent action is needed to dismantle the illegal operations, hold the culprits accountable, and restore environmental integrity. The Forest Department must prioritize the issue and take decisive steps to address this growing menace.
