Desk Report, February 21, 2024: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert, predicting substantial rainfall in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Sikkim for the upcoming three days. A westerly trough initiated wet conditions in Northeast India earlier this week. As the system has progressively approached the sister states, a new cyclonic circulation has concurrently developed in the region.
From Wednesday to Friday (Feb 21-23), extensive areas of Northeast India are anticipated to encounter varying degrees of precipitation, including light to moderate rain and snow. Thunderstorms, infused with lightning and gusty winds, are also expected during this period. Particularly on Wednesday and Thursday (Feb 21-22), heavy rains ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm are forecasted for certain parts of Arunachal Pradesh. Higher-altitude regions are likely to witness heavy snowfall.

Similar intense rainfall is anticipated in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Thursday. In the western direction, the IMD projects light to moderate thundershowers, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, throughout Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim until Thursday.
The development of these weather patterns poses potential risks and challenges for the affected regions. Residents and authorities are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions in light of the anticipated meteorological conditions. The IMD will continue to monitor and provide updates as the situation unfolds.
