India Defeats Bangladesh by Six Wickets in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Opener

India Secures Six-Wicket Win Over Bangladesh in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Opener
Sports Desk; February 21, 2025: Shubman Gill’s century and Mohammed Shami’s exceptional bowling display powered India to a commanding six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Bangladesh faced early setbacks. The team struggled at 35/5 as India’s bowlers dominated the initial phase. However, Towhid Hridoy’s maiden ODI century (100) and Jaker Ali’s resilient knock of 68 helped Bangladesh recover. Their partnership steadied the innings and lifted the total to a competitive 228 runs.
Shami’s outstanding performance with the ball ensured India remained in control. The veteran pacer delivered a match-winning spell, claiming 5/53 in 10 overs. With this feat, he surpassed Zaheer Khan to become India’s highest wicket-taker in ICC ODI tournaments and also crossed the 200-wicket milestone in ODIs.
Chasing 229, India started strong. Shubman Gill anchored the innings with a brilliant 101, setting a solid foundation. Despite Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain’s efforts to turn the game by dismissing Virat Kohli and Axar Patel, India remained composed. Hossain’s breakthroughs did little to shake the chase, as India comfortably reached the target.
This victory marks a dominant start for India in the Group A fixture of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The team’s balanced performance with both bat and ball showcased their intent to excel in the tournament.
