Jamtara Train Accident Claims Lives: Prime Minister and President Extend Condolences
Desk Report, February 29, 2024: At least two individuals lost their lives in a tragic incident at the Kalajharia railway station in Jharkhand’s Jamtara, where panic ensued as passengers attempted to flee from what was believed to be a fire on board an express train. The mishap occurred as passengers of the Anga Express, en route from Bhagalpur to Bengaluru, disembarked amidst rumors of a fire, only to face a fatal collision with another train while crossing the tracks.
Contrary to initial reports of a fire, the Eastern Railway clarified that the victims were not passengers but pedestrians on the tracks, struck by an oncoming train. A three-member investigative team has been assembled to delve into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rescue efforts are currently underway, with medical teams, ambulances, and buses deployed to transport the injured to Jamtara for medical attention. The accident site, located 15 kilometers from the district headquarters, has become the focus of relief operations.
Expressing condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lamented the tragedy and extended thoughts to the bereaved families, while Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren assured support to those affected and commended the ongoing relief efforts. Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta mobilized resources for rescue and medical assistance, emphasizing the importance of swift action in the wake of the accident.
President Droupadi Murmu joined in mourning the loss of lives and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured, acknowledging the profound sorrow cast by the unforeseen events in Jamtara district.
