Kamrup Imposes ‘No Seatbelt, No Fuel’ Rule to Enhance Road Safety
Guwahati: The District Magistrate of Kamrup, Assam, has issued a stringent order under Section 163 of the BNSS, targeting road safety violations. This order, effective immediately, aims to address the alarming disregard for safety norms by car drivers and two-wheeler riders. Violators will face strict penalties, and petrol pumps will play a critical role in enforcement.
According to the order, petrol stations in Kamrup district are prohibited from selling or refilling fuel to drivers and riders not wearing seat belts or helmets. The “No Seatbelt, No Fuel” policy ensures better compliance with traffic laws and reduces road accidents. Additionally, entry into petrol stations via the wrong direction, known as contra flow, is strictly banned to minimize congestion and chaos.
The district administration has made it compulsory for all petrol stations to install CCTV cameras with DVRs. This measure ensures accurate recording of vehicles, helping identify violators of the new rule. Petrol pump owners are given ten days to comply with the installation mandate. The Executive Magistrates will oversee the compliance process, reviewing footage to penalize defaulters.
Circle officers in respective jurisdictions are directed to execute the order, ensuring its effective implementation. Violations will attract penalties under Section 223 of BNSS and other applicable laws.
The District Magistrate has clarified that the order does not require prior notice to individuals or organizations. Issued as an ex-parte order, it remains in force until further notice. Those aggrieved by the decision may approach the magistrate for modifications or rescission.
The Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, will ensure adherence to the directive in letter and spirit. The initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to public safety and discipline on the roads.
