Desk Report, February 19, 2024: In a vibrant inauguration ceremony today, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur, officially opened the 4th Khelo India University Games in Guwahati. The event promises to be a spectacular showcase, hosting 4,544 athletes from across the nation, competing in 20 diverse sports disciplines spread across the picturesque northeastern states.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a special video message, addressed the athletes and attendees, highlighting the significance of the Khelo India University Games in fostering unity and passion across the country. PM Modi commended the mascot, Ashtalakshmi, a butterfly symbolizing the newfound aspirations of the North East. “It’s like giving wings to the dreams of the region,” he remarked.
Emphasizing the theme of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat,’ PM Modi encouraged athletes to play wholeheartedly and fearlessly, reinforcing the idea that setbacks are opportunities to learn. He applauded the efforts of state governments, especially Assam, for promoting sports and providing opportunities for the youth.
PM Modi drew attention to the changing societal perceptions towards sports, noting the shift in parental attitudes. He expressed pride in parents now embracing their children’s achievements in sports, mirroring the cultural transformation in the North East where sports are celebrated fervently.

Celebrating India’s global success in sports, PM Modi credited the government’s initiatives like Khelo India, Tops, and others for creating a supportive environment for young athletes. He highlighted a record budget allocation of over 3500 crore rupees for sports this year.
The Prime Minister encouraged athletes to explore the beauty of the North East beyond the sports arena, urging them to share their experiences on social media with #NorthEastMemories. He suggested using the Bhashini App and learning local phrases to enhance their cultural experience.
Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, reflecting on the success of past Khelo India events, expressed excitement about this year’s University Games. With 18 different venues across seven states, the Games will feature 20 sports disciplines, including yoga and traditional sports like Mallakhamb, aligning with the mission of promoting a Fit India.
As the 4th Khelo India University Games unfold, the focus extends beyond breaking records and winning medals. It’s about forging friendships, breaking barriers, and collectively dreaming of a Viksit Bharat – a developed and flourishing India.
