Bus Accident in Ladakh’s Leh District: 6 Dead, 22 Injured in Gorge Fall
Desk Report, August 22, 2024: In a tragic incident, six people lost their lives, and 22 others were injured when a bus plunged into a 200-foot-deep gorge in Ladakh’s Leh district. The accident occurred in the Durbuk area while the bus was transporting school staff members to a wedding function, according to Leh Deputy Commissioner Santosh Sukhadeve.
Rescue teams from the district administration and police quickly reached the scene. The injured were initially treated at a local hospital, where they received first aid. Due to the severity of the injuries, helicopters were deployed to airlift 22 injured passengers to the SNM Hospital and the army hospital in Leh.
The situation remains critical for two of the injured, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Sukhadeve. Rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts focused on providing urgent medical care to those affected.
This tragic accident highlights the dangers of mountainous roads in Ladakh, where similar incidents have occurred in the past. The authorities are investigating the cause of the accident to prevent future occurrences.
