Tragic Landslide Claims Five Lives in Assam’s Karimganj District
Desk Report, June 19, 2024: A devastating landslide in Assam’s Karimganj District claimed the lives of five people late Tuesday night. Among the victims were a woman and her three daughters, as well as a three-year-old boy.
The tragedy occurred in the Gainachora (Bendargool) village within the Badarpur Police Station jurisdiction. Partha Protim Das, Superintendent of Police for Karimganj District, reported the incident, stating that the landslide struck at 12:45 AM.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Officer-in-Charge of Badarpur Police Station, along with his team and SDRF personnel, immediately rushed to the scene to conduct a rescue operation. After three hours of effort, the team recovered five bodies from the debris.
The deceased were identified as Roymun Nessa, 55, and her daughters Sahida Khanam, 18, Jahida Khanam, 16, and Hamida Khanam, 11. The three-year-old boy, Mehdi Hassan, was the son of Mahimuddin.
This tragic event underscores the perilous living conditions faced by residents in landslide-prone areas, highlighting the need for urgent disaster management and preventive measures.
