Wayanad Landslides: 84 Dead, Hundreds Feared Trapped in Devastating Monsoon Rains
Desk Report, July 30, 2024: Devastating monsoon rains triggered multiple landslides, killing 84 people and trapping hundreds more under mud and debris in Wayanad, Kerala, on Tuesday. The Indian Meteorological Department had predicted heavy rain for the district.
The Indian Army was called in after a vital bridge connecting the affected area to the nearest town was destroyed. The Army deployed four columns, including two from the 122 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) and two from the DSC Centre, Kannur. Additionally, two Indian Air Force helicopters were mobilized, according to a statement from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office.
Rescue efforts face significant challenges due to the lack of internet connectivity in the area. The Kerala government announced state mourning for July 30 and 31, postponing all state government programs. State Forest Minister AK Saseendran described the situation as serious, with all agencies assisting in rescue operations. The district administration set up a special control room at the police headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Vijayan, assuring all possible help from the Centre. The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
The emotional toll on the community is immense as families await news of their loved ones. The rescue operations continue under challenging conditions, with hopes of finding more survivors dwindling as time passes.
