Lt General Upendra Dwivedi Appointed as New Chief of Army Staff
Desk Report, June 12, 2024: In a significant announcement on Tuesday, the central government declared that Lt General Upendra Dwivedi will be the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). As per a statement from the Defence Ministry, Lt General Upendra Dwivedi is set to assume his new role on June 30, succeeding the current Army Chief, General Manoj Pande.
Lt Gen Dwivedi, who will become the 30th Army Chief, brings with him a wealth of experience from a distinguished military career spanning over 39 years. His previous roles include serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff, Northern Army Commander, and Director General of Infantry. His career is marked by numerous command appointments and significant contributions to the Indian Army.
An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, Lt Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into the 18th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in December 1984, a unit he later commanded. His career has seen him in critical positions, including Deputy Chief at Army Headquarters and Commander of the 9th Corps in Himachal Pradesh.
Lt Gen Dwivedi’s appointment as Chief of Army Staff is a testament to his extensive experience and unwavering dedication to the Indian Army. His leadership is expected to provide continued strategic direction and strengthen the force’s operational capabilities.
