Manipur Police and Security Forces Seize Weapons, Arrest Militants in Major Operations
Desk Report, May 23, 2024: Manipur Police and security forces recently conducted comprehensive search operations in Kakching and Churachandpur Districts. These efforts resulted in significant recoveries and arrests, aiming to curb the region’s ongoing security threats.
During operations in Kakching District, authorities seized a 9mm country-made pistol with a magazine, a 36 MMK1 hand grenade without a detonator, three 2-inch mortar shells, two bulletproof jackets, a Baofeng handset with a battery, a pair of hunting boots, and a rice bag. These items were found in Hiyanglam Hiranmei Hiyangkhong, highlighting the area’s strategic importance.
In a separate operation in Churachandpur District, the search yielded two 12-bore sniper rifles, a 9mm country-made pistol with a magazine, a Prahari MK-II gas gun, a modified .303 rifle with a magazine, four 12-bore single-barrel rifles, a long-range tear gas shell, a Prahari MK-IV tear smoke grenade, a CS anti-riot tear smoke grenade, three 38mm anti-riot cartridges with rubber bullets, an anti-riot stun gun, two live rounds, and two improvised heavy mortars. These items were recovered from Khengmol Village, further underscoring the district’s volatile situation.
In addition to the weapon seizures, Manipur Police arrested two active members of the proscribed outfit PREPAK (Pro) in Imphal East District. The suspects, identified as Salam Lourembam, alias Bembem Devi (42), and Kangabam Sanatomba Singh, alias Amuba (49), were found in possession of Rs. 35,000 in cash, a Honda Activa scooter, three mobile phones, and a wallet. Their involvement in extortion activities has been confirmed.
Furthermore, another active member of the KYKL SOREPA, Khumukcham Brushlee Singh (18), was arrested in Kakching District for similar extortion-related activities. Recovered items from his possession included a mobile handset, an MI power bank with a USB cable, a Rs. 200 note, and a two-wheeler vehicle.
These operations highlight the ongoing efforts by Manipur Police and security forces to maintain peace and order in the region. The recovered items and arrests underscore the significant threats posed by various militant outfits in Manipur.
