Desk Report, April 06, 2024: In a significant joint operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted and seized 4.9 kilograms of foreign-origin gold, valued at approximately Rs 3.43 crore. The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Indian Coast Guard and the Custom Preventive unit, took place at mid-sea near Mandapam, Tamil Nadu.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the DRI had received information about an attempt to smuggle foreign-origin gold into India from Sri Lanka. The suspected smuggling was believed to be orchestrated by a gang using a fishing boat for their illicit activities.
Following the intelligence tip-off, a pursuit was initiated, resulting in the successful interception of the suspect boat at mid-sea. The Indian Coast Guard ship, with the DRI team on board, managed to apprehend the vessel after a chase.
Three individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the smuggling attempt and are currently undergoing interrogation by the authorities. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the details of the smuggling network and to identify any additional accomplices involved in the operation.
