3.9 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded in Assam, Epicenter Southeast of Goalpara
Guwahati, August 25, 2024: A minor earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale struck Assam late Sunday night, August 25, 2024. The quake, which occurred at 11:05 PM, had its epicenter 30 km southeast of Goalpara. The seismic event was recorded at a very shallow depth of just 5 km, contributing to its impact.
The tremor, though small, was felt in several areas close to the epicenter. Residents in Guwahati, Goalpara, Abhayapuri, Barpeta, Chapar, Bongaigaon, Bilasipara, and Barpeta Road reported experiencing weak shaking. Despite the tremor’s shallow depth, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the affected regions.
Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Northeast India, a seismically active zone. Even though this event was minor, it serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activities. The authorities continue to monitor the situation, though further tremors are not expected.
The late-night quake caught many residents off guard, but its minimal magnitude and depth prevented any significant impact. However, experts urge residents to remain prepared for future seismic activities, given the region’s history.
