Major Seizures of Drugs, Illicit Liquor, and Areca Nuts by Mizoram Police
Desk Report, June 8, 2024: Mizoram Police have made significant strides in their ongoing battle against drugs and other illegal activities, conducting successful operations across multiple locations.
On June 6, Champhai Police Station officers, during a random check at Chalbawia Junction Khankawn Police Check gate, intercepted a Hyundai i10. Upon inspection, they discovered and seized 156 soap cases of suspected heroin, weighing 1.902 kilograms. The contraband, valued at Rs. 57,06,000, was hidden inside the vehicle’s doors. The driver, Lalnunpuia of Zokhawthar, Aizawl, was taken into custody. A case, Champhai PS Case No.121/24, under sections 21(c) and 25 of the NDPS Act, was registered for further investigation.
Earlier, on the night of June 5, the Lunglei District Special Branch team, acting on a tip-off, confiscated 10 soap cases (116 grams) of suspected heroin. The illicit substance, valued at Rs. 3,48,060, was found in the possession of Francis Lalramthanga of Bazar Veng, Lunglei. This led to the registration of Lunglei Police Station Case No.110 under section 21(b) of the NDPS Act.
In another significant operation, early on June 6, officers at E. Lungdar Check Post seized 7,500 kilograms of dry areca nuts. The nuts, contained in 150 bags, were being illegally transported from Myanmar in two vehicles. The drivers, Thangtinkapa of Leisenzo and T. Chhuanliana of Sesih, both from Champhai District, were detained. The seized goods and vehicles have been sent to the District Magistrate Serchhip for legal proceedings.
Additionally, on the night of June 6, a Special Narcotic Police Station team intercepted a truck (Tata 610) at Zemabawk area. They seized 66 cases (1,620 cans) of beer valued at Rs. 4,86,000 and 23 cases (460 bottles) of Soju valued at Rs. 2,53,000. Three individuals, Tlanglawma of Chaltlang Lily Veng, Malsawmsangi of Zemabawk East, and Thahlunthanga of Chanmari West, Aizawl, were arrested. This led to the registration of Bawngkawn PS Case No.201/24 under sections 6(1) and 7(3) of the MLP Act.
