According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), PM Modi secured 6,12,970 votes, accounting for 54.24% of the total votes cast. His nearest rival, Ajai Rai, the Uttar Pradesh Congress president, garnered 4,60,457 votes, translating to 40.74%, resulting in a winning margin of 1,52,513 votes.
Varanasi, one of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 parliamentary constituencies, reaffirmed its status as a stronghold for Modi, who has previously been elected from this seat in 2014 and 2019. The constituency participated in the final and seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, which took place on June 1.
In the previous 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Modi achieved an even larger margin, securing 63.62% of the votes and defeating Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party by a staggering 674,664 votes. Varanasi, categorized as a General-category parliamentary seat, witnessed intense campaigning this year, marked by high-profile roadshows led by Modi himself.
Besides Modi, six other candidates contested the Varanasi seat, with Congress’s Ajai Rai and Ather Jamal Lari of the Bahujan Samaj Party emerging as the principal challengers. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Modi defeated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, securing 56.37% of the votes with a tally of 5,81,022 votes.
Over the past decade, Modi has spearheaded extensive development initiatives in Varanasi. His flagship project, the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, has significantly enhanced the city’s economic landscape, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike.
Modi’s political journey commenced as an RSS pracharak in 1971. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1985, ascending through the party ranks to serve as the BJP’s secretary. He later became the Chief Minister of Gujarat, a position he held from 2001 to 2013, before assuming the office of the Prime Minister in 2014.
As Modi embarks on his third term representing Varanasi in the Lok Sabha, the city and its constituents look forward to continued development and progress under his leadership.
