2024 Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Nihon Hidankyo for Anti-Nuclear Efforts

2024 Nobel Peace Prize Honors Nihon Hidankyo for Nuclear Disarmament Advocacy

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots organization of atomic bomb survivors, known as Hibakusha, from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Nihon Hidankyo has been recognized for its tireless advocacy for a nuclear-free world and its efforts to raise awareness about the devastating effects of nuclear weapons.

Founded after the atomic bombings in August 1945, Nihon Hidankyo has played a crucial role in shedding light on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. Through their personal stories, survivors have helped shape what is known as the “nuclear taboo”—a global understanding that nuclear weapons are morally unacceptable.

The Nobel Committee highlighted the importance of the Hibakusha’s firsthand accounts, which have been central to global opposition to nuclear weapons. These stories have been shared through educational campaigns and public advocacy, helping people understand the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare.

Although the world has avoided nuclear weapon use in conflict for nearly 80 years, the Nobel Committee warned that this nuclear taboo is under serious threat. Modernizing nuclear arsenals, the risk of new countries obtaining nuclear capabilities, and recent threats to use such weapons are concerning signs for global peace.

Nihon Hidankyo, established in 1956 as the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organisations, has grown into Japan’s most influential Hibakusha group. The organization has gathered countless testimonies from survivors, passed resolutions, and sent delegations to the United Nations, all urging for nuclear disarmament.

As the world nears the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, the Nobel Committee stressed the importance of remembering the Hibakusha’s experiences. New generations in Japan are carrying forward the legacy of these survivors, ensuring that the fight for nuclear disarmament continues.

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize aligns with Alfred Nobel’s vision of honoring those whose work benefits humanity. This award adds to a long history of recognition for advocates of nuclear disarmament and arms control, underlining the continued global struggle for peace.
