28 Tourists Killed in Brutal Terror Attack at Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir

Deadly Terror Attack in Pahalgam: 28 Tourists Killed, Probe Underway in Jammu and Kashmir

April 23, 2025: In a shocking terror strike on Tuesday, militants gunned down 28 tourists at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The attack left 13 others injured. Among the dead were two foreign nationals — one each from Italy and Israel.

The assault is being called one of the deadliest in the region targeting civilians in recent years. The attackers fired indiscriminately at a crowd of tourists enjoying the scenic location. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen appeared to select Hindu tourists by checking identity documents and clothing before opening fire.

The meadow, known for its lush greenery and high tourist footfall, was bustling with visitors during the incident. Panic spread quickly as gunshots rang out. Blood stained the grass, and terrified tourists ran for cover.

One of the victims, Manjunath from Shivamogga in Karnataka, was on holiday with his wife and son. His wife survived the attack and shared a heartbreaking account. According to her, the attackers shot her husband in front of her eyes. She alleged the terrorists clearly targeted Hindus.

Survivors reported seeing three to four gunmen. Security officials suspect the militants had crossed into India from Pakistan. The Indian Army, along with paramilitary forces, launched a major joint operation soon after the incident. One militant was reportedly killed, but up to four others are believed to be hiding in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the brutal killings. He expressed deep sorrow for the victims and their families, saying, “I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

He assured that the culprits will be brought to justice. “They will not be spared. Their evil agenda will never succeed,” he declared, reaffirming the government’s firm stance against terrorism.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the deaths of people from his state. He called an emergency meeting and coordinated with the Resident Commissioner in Delhi to help the victims’ families. Support measures are already underway.

Local police in Anantnag set up a 24×7 emergency help desk for tourists. Security has been tightened across the valley. Forces remain on high alert as the search for the attackers continues.

This incident has reignited national debate over safety in the conflict-hit region. Many are now calling for stronger counter-terrorism measures and better protection for civilians.

The brutal nature of this assault has left the nation in mourning — and renewed its resolve to combat terrorism with greater force and unity.
