IPS Partha Sarathi Mahanta Appointed New Guwahati Police Commissioner

Guwahati: In a significant reshuffle within the Assam Police, senior IPS officer Partha Sarathi Mahanta was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Guwahati. He succeeds Diganta Barah, who has been assigned the role of Inspector General of Police (IGP) (Special Branch) Assam.

Earlier this year, Mahanta was promoted to IGP from the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and given additional charge as IGP (Traffic and Road Safety). His earlier positions include DIG (Administration) in February 2023, following his role as Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati. Recognized for his exemplary service, he was honored with the Kendriya Grihamantri Dakshata Padak by the Ministry of Home Affairs for his contributions to Special Operations.

Partha Sarathi Mahanta will take charge as Guwahati Police Commissioner while continuing his responsibilities as IGP (Special Task Force). His predecessor, Diganta Barah, has been appointed as the Director of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon.

The reshuffle also included key transfers of five other senior police officers. IPS Akhilesh Kumar Singh, previously IGP (T&AP), has been assigned as IGP (Law and Order) while retaining his position as IGP (Communication). Lachit Baruah will continue as Managing Director of Assam Police Housing Corporation Ltd while holding substantive charge as IGP (Special Branch).

Additionally, Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan, who served as IGP (Law and Order), has been reassigned as IGP (Administration). Meanwhile, Vivek Raj Singh will now serve as IGP (T&AP) alongside his existing roles as IGP (MPC) and IGP (BTAD).

This reshuffle reflects the Assam Police’s efforts to streamline its leadership structure and strengthen its operational efficiency across key departments. The transfer of senior officers is expected to enhance coordination and execution of law enforcement strategies in the state.
