Karimganj Constituency’s Presiding Officer, Nazrul Haque Tapadar, Suspended Over Alleged Negligence in Election Duty
Desk Report, April 30, 2024: The Presiding Officer of the Karimganj Lok Sabha Constituency in Assam, Nazrul Haque Tapadar, has been suspended for alleged negligence and denial of election duty. Tapadar, a librarian by profession, held the post at Polling Station no. 11, 240 No. Nayadhar LP School under 125-Patharkandi Assembly Constituency.
The suspension was issued in response to a video released during mock polling at a designated polling station in Karimganj. Abdul Sahid, the election agent for Abdul Hameed, was reportedly caught in the footage showing individuals using their mobile phones to cast votes during the rigged elections. Such practices directly violate election regulations, which strictly prohibit the use of telephones, smart watches, cordless phones and other electronic devices inside the polling place Besides, it is the responsibility of the officer to ensure that this rule will apply.
After investigating the matter, Tapadar was found guilty of gross negligence in the discharge of his duties. Consequently, the Karimganj district election commissioner issued an order suspending Tapadar, with immediate effect. Decided in accordance with Rule 6(1)(a) of the Assam Service (Discipline Appeals) Rules, 1964 .
An order issued by the District Election Officer said, “Sri Nazrul Haque Tapadar has now been suspended from the duties with immediate effect pending his withdrawal.”
The incident has created a serious crisis in the integrity and compliance of election procedures in Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency. The unleashed burn rate underlines the Election Commission’s commitment to maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process and ensuring the accountability of electoral officials.
