Ex-Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Demise Leaves India in Grief
Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and renowned economist, passed away on Thursday at 92. He was admitted to the emergency ward of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after collapsing at home earlier that evening. Despite resuscitation efforts, Singh was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
The veteran Congress leader retired from the Rajya Sabha in April 2024, concluding an illustrious 33-year tenure in the Upper House. He served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s political and economic landscape.
Dr. Singh had been undergoing treatment for age-related health issues. On December 26, he experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Immediate medical care was administered before he was rushed to AIIMS at 8:06 PM. However, doctors could not revive him.
Singh is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh, and three daughters. Prominent Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi visited the hospital upon hearing the news of his critical condition.
Dr. Manmohan Singh played a pivotal role in shaping modern India’s economic policies. As Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, he introduced the groundbreaking 1991 economic reforms. These reforms steered India away from a severe financial crisis and paved the way for liberalization, which transformed the nation’s economic trajectory.
Singh’s leadership as Prime Minister further cemented his legacy. His calm demeanor, sharp intellect, and policy-driven governance left a lasting impression on India’s development.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.”
Dr. Singh’s contributions extended beyond economic policy. His inclusive leadership and commitment to public welfare endeared him to millions.
As India bids farewell to one of its most revered leaders, his contributions to the nation’s progress will remain etched in history.
