Rajasthan Royals Struggle as Punjab Kings Clinch Victory in IPL 2024
Sports Desk, May 16, 2024: In a crucial IPL 2024 playoff match at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Rajasthan Royals (RR) faltered against Punjab Kings (PBKS), posting their second-lowest powerplay score of 38 runs. Despite the efforts of captain Sanju Samson, who reached a personal milestone of 500 runs in an IPL season for the first time, RR managed a modest total of 144-9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore, brought in to replace Jos Buttler, struggled to accelerate, scoring 18 off 23 balls. India’s World Cup hopefuls Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson also failed to make significant contributions, scoring 4 and 18 respectively. However, local favorite Riyan Parag provided some respite with a spirited 48 off 34 balls, while Ravichandran Ashwin added a valuable 28 off 19 balls lower down the order.
Punjab Kings’ Harshal Patel, who retained the Purple Cap from Mumbai Indians’ Jasprit Bumrah, delivered an economical and effective spell, claiming two wickets for 28 runs in his four overs. Avesh Khan sparked a top-order collapse for Punjab, capturing two wickets in his first over and reducing PBKS to 36-3 within 4.5 overs.
Nevertheless, Punjab Kings’ skipper Sam Curran led a resilient fightback, forging a crucial partnership with Jitesh Sharma, who contributed 22 runs. The momentum shifted decisively when Impact Player Ashutosh Sharma joined Curran, helping to stabilize the innings. Curran’s unbeaten 63 off 41 balls ultimately steered PBKS to a five-wicket victory.
This win highlights Punjab Kings’ robust performance and tactical acumen, while Rajasthan Royals must regroup quickly to stay competitive in the playoffs.
