Congress Working Committee Unanimously Endorses Rahul Gandhi for Leader of the Opposition
Desk Report, June 8, 2024: The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the apex decision-making body of the Congress party, has unanimously passed a resolution to designate Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This significant decision follows Gandhi’s recent electoral triumphs in Wayanad and Raebareli.
During the deliberations, sources revealed that Gandhi expressed his willingness to contemplate the proposal to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition. However, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reminded him of the imperative acceptance of the position in light of the CWC’s resolution.
“In another resolution, the CWC unanimously implored Rahul Gandhi to undertake the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. All participants were unequivocal in their agreement that Rahul Gandhi is the ideal candidate for this responsibility,” stated Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, conveying the sentiment following the meeting.
Venugopal underscored the paramount issues raised by the party during the election campaign, encompassing unemployment, inflation, women’s empowerment, and social justice. He emphasized the imperative continuation of addressing these concerns within the parliamentary forum and asserted that Rahul Gandhi is the most adept leader to spearhead this endeavor. “For a resolute and vigilant Opposition, and to safeguard the sanctity of the Constitution, it is imperative for Rahul Gandhi to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition,” Venugopal reiterated.
The principal resolution extolled Gandhi’s pivotal contributions to the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign. “Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s distinction is underscored by the Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, initiatives he orchestrated and led. These yatras marked seminal moments in the trajectory of our nation’s politics, infusing hope and confidence among our cadre and electorate,” affirmed the resolution.
Additionally, the resolution lauded Gandhi’s focused electoral campaign, which underscored the paramount importance of safeguarding the Constitution. The resonance of the PaanchNyay-Pachees Guarantee program during the campaign was attributed to Gandhi’s extensive engagement with diverse segments of society, including youth, women, farmers, and minorities.
When queried about Gandhi’s acceptance of the responsibility, Venugopal responded, “He will deliberate and convey his decision within 2-4 days.” Notably, while the Congress president holds the mantle of Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, the party has been devoid of the requisite numbers to assert the status of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the past decade. A party must secure a minimum of 10% of the 543 seats to stake claim to this position.
