Rare Ganges Softshell Turtles Rescued at Milpara in Hajo: A Remarkable Conservation Effort
Hajo, March 12, 2024: In a remarkable display of local cooperation and environmental stewardship, fishermen at Milpara in Hajo on March 11, rescued a pair of rare Ganges softshell turtles from the waters of the Brahmaputra River. The discovery, made by Noorjamal Ali and his companions during a routine fishing excursion.
Upon encountering the endangered turtles, Ali and his fellow fishermen wasted no time in contacting local activists and authorities. Ataur Rahman, a conscientious youth, alongside village Gaonburah Qutubuddin Ahmed, swiftly mobilized efforts to ensure the turtles’ safe retrieval.

The two turtles were ceremoniously handed over to wildlife activist Pranab Malakar. Under Malakar’s supervision, the turtles were released into the serene waters of the pond at Bishnupuskar, located within the Haigrib Madhab temple premises.
Speaking on the successful rescue and release, Malakar expressed satisfaction in witnessing the turtles return to their natural habitat unharmed. Their swift and coordinated rescue serves as a testament to the community’s commitment to environmental protection and wildlife conservation.
