Resignation of Veteran Leader Rana Goswami Sparks Political Speculation in APCC
Desk Report, February 28, 2024: In a significant development within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), veteran leader Rana Goswami tendered his resignation from multiple key positions within the party. Goswami, who held the post of working president and served as an active member of the Indian National Congress, formally announced his departure through a resignation letter addressed to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday.
In his correspondence, Goswami cited personal reasons for stepping down from his roles within the party’s hierarchy. This move follows his earlier resignation as the organizational in-charge of Upper Assam, submitted to APCC Chief Bhupen Kumar Borah on February 25, 2024. Goswami attributed “various political reasons” as the impetus behind his decision to relinquish his responsibilities in the Upper Assam region, encompassing the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, and Biswanath.

Speculation surrounding Goswami’s political trajectory intensified after reports emerged of a clandestine meeting he convened with his supporters in his hometown of Jorhat. Amid swirling rumors suggesting a potential defection to either the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its regional ally, the Asom Gana Parishad, Goswami’s resignation serves as a pivotal development within Assam’s political landscape.
Responding to queries from media personnel regarding the conjecture surrounding Goswami’s allegiance, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended an open invitation to the veteran politician to join the BJP fold. Acknowledging Goswami’s influential stature within Assam’s political milieu, CM Sarma expressed optimism regarding the prospective addition of such a seasoned figure to the BJP ranks.
CM Sarma clarified that despite his overture, Goswami had not engaged in any formal discussions regarding his potential defection to the BJP at the time of the statement. Nevertheless, the Chief Minister’s remarks underscored the BJP’s readiness to embrace defectors from rival political factions, signaling a strategic maneuver aimed at consolidating the party’s foothold in the region.
Goswami’s departure from the Congress echelon not only underscores internal fissures within the party but also injects a renewed sense of volatility into Assam’s political dynamics. As speculations persist regarding his next political move, the ramifications of Goswami’s resignation reverberate across the state’s political landscape, foreshadowing potential realignments and power shifts in the days to come.
