Sarbananda Sonowal Lambasts Congress, Vows to Uphold Assamese Interests
Desk Report, March 28, 2024: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said it’s unfortunate that someone who aligns with Congress talks about securing the Assamese Society. He strongly criticized the opposition for not providing helpful solutions and instead using misleading statements. Sonowal pointed out that since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s time, Congress hasn’t given Assam and the North-East much support for prosperity or safety. He accused Congress of causing problems for the Assamese people and creating violent conflicts. Sarbananda Sonowal also criticized Congress for forcefully stopping movements like the Assam movement. He questioned the trustworthiness of the opposition, which supports Congress, to ensure the rights of the Assamese people.
Speaking at a rally in Tingkhang, Sarbananda Sonowal, the BJP candidate for Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, said, “Congress made the harsh IMDT Act only for Assam, not the whole country. Unlike the CAA, which is for all of India, the IMDT Act by Congress risked the safety of the Assamese people. The Congress government put the interests of the native ‘Khilonjiya’ people at risk to gain power, by getting support from non-citizens. Any objections to CAA can be challenged in court, as seen by current appeals to the Supreme Court. The government is ready to accept the court’s decision. But those causing confusion among the people will face consequences.”
Sarbananda Sonowal added, “The Congress-led Opposition shouldn’t question my identity as an Asomiya. I am an Asomiya through and through. I didn’t hesitate to challenge the unfair IMDT Act in the Supreme Court. I stood firm during the six-year fight. The Supreme Court decided the act was unfair to Assam. Even though we are one nation, Congress treated the Assamese as second-class citizens. My main goal is to stand up for Assam’s national issues, not just to hold political positions. Protecting the rights of the Assamese people is my top priority.”
“In 2004, the AGP chose me to run for the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency. Getting the most votes from the Tingkhang area in that election was very special to me. I have a soft spot for the people of Tingkhang. Our aim is to make the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency one of the best in the country. This area has ten assembly constituencies and has a rich history. During British rule, the first tea estate in the Dibrugarh-Tinsukia region was established here. The area is rich in resources like coal, timber, tea leaves, and oil. It celebrates 200 years of Assam Tea, thanks to the hard work of Assam’s tea workers. By 2047, we aim to support Hon’ble Narendra Modi’s plan to make India a developed country. We want the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency to be a key area in the country. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the BJP-led NDA government has achieved a lot in ten years. Modi’s commitment to ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ has pushed the country towards progress. The positive changes can be seen in the villages, towns, and tea gardens in the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha area. Sarbananda Sonowal talked about these points during his speech.”
