Severe Storms Wreak Havoc Across Assam: Multiple Injuries and Extensive Damage Reported
Desk Report, April 01, 2024: A devastating storm, accompanied by thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall, has wreaked havoc across various parts of Assam, causing extensive damage to property and injuring several individuals.
In the Gossaigaon area of Kokrajhar district, numerous communities have borne the brunt of this natural disaster. Satyapur in Gossaigaon and the villages of Lalpur and Majati in Sharaibeel have witnessed the destruction of homes due to relentless rain and hailstorms. Additionally, in Boko’s Lampi, four individuals sustained serious injuries when their residence collapsed amidst the ferocious storm. The injured parties, identified as Bhima Roy, Janaki Roy, and Prabitra Roy, were promptly taken to the Boko Health Centre for medical attention. Furthermore, families such as Budhimaya, Indumaya, and Reena Gurung have suffered property damage, compelling the Lampi Regional Village Defence Party to facilitate the relocation of affected families to safer locations.
The adverse weather conditions have also severely impacted transportation infrastructure. National Highway 37 has been rendered impassable due to heavy rainfall, disrupting bus services between Upper Assam, Meghalaya, and Guwahati. Particularly in the vicinity of Jorabat, 10 miles area of the highway resembles a pond, impeding vehicular movement. Meghalaya faces similar challenges, with hill excavation causing drains along the highway to become obstructed, exacerbating the plight of commuters.
Tragically, at Digunsara tea estate in Cachar, six tea plantation workers, including women, fell victim to a lightning strike during their workday. The lightning-induced injuries necessitated urgent medical attention, and the injured were promptly transported to Silchar Medical College for treatment. Among the injured, Tiklu Bhowmik’s condition remains critical, underscoring the severity of the incident.
In Parbatjhora, the first storm of the year unleashed widespread devastation, resulting in significant disruptions to traffic on National Highway 17 in Bagribari. The collapse of numerous sal trees blocked the highway, causing a considerable delay. Additionally, the Maa Mahamaya hotel suffered complete destruction when a sal tree collapsed onto the premises. Approximately 11 adjacent shops also sustained damage. Meanwhile, administrative structures such as the Kazigaon circle officer’s office and the roof sheets of Bagribari police cantonment bore the brunt of the storm’s force, exacerbating the overall impact of the calamity.
As affected communities grapple with the aftermath of this calamitous event, efforts to provide relief and assistance to those in need remain paramount. The resilience of the affected regions will undoubtedly be tested as they endeavor to rebuild and recover from the extensive damage inflicted by this formidable storm.
