Sheikh Hasina Resigns as Prime Minister Amid Violent Clashes in Bangladesh
Desk Report, August 05, 2024: Sheikh Hasina has resigned as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister following violent clashes in the capital. Supporters of her party, the Awami League, clashed with protesters demanding her resignation.
Hasina, who has led the nation since 2009, left Dhaka in a military helicopter. Reports suggest she may be heading to a safer location. Accompanying her was her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana.
Protesters stormed Gono Bhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence. The Bangladesh Army, led by General Waker-Uz-Zaman, has moved to take control. The Army chief announced plans to form an interim government and appealed for peace. Reports indicate the military gave Hasina a 45-minute ultimatum to step down.
Shocking visuals show protesters vandalizing a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father and the leader who led Bangladesh to independence from Pakistan. These scenes are unfolding on Dhaka’s streets, adding to the tense atmosphere.
