Supreme Court Mandate Overhauls Electoral Security Measures: Landmark Directive Strengthens Democratic Integrity
Desk Report, May 02, 2024: While the Supreme Court of India in reply to Writ Petition (Civil) No. 434 of 2023, issued a special directive on April 26, 2024, mandating substantive changes to the operational and security measures governing Symbol Load Units (SLUs) in the election system . Aimed at strengthening the integrity and security of the country’s electoral system, the guidelines are an important milestone in India’s democratic environment.
With effect from May 1, 2024, the Election Commission of India has been tasked with implementing revised guidelines under all aspects of voter loading conducted in the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPAT) system. This mandate places additional responsibility on Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) nationwide to establish the necessary infrastructure and management plans to ensure the effective implementation of these revised policies.
