Tragedy Strikes Brahmaputra: Boat Accident in South Salmara-Mankachar Leaves Passengers Missing
Hatsingimari, March 31, 2024: A devastating boat accident has occurred in the Brahmaputra river near Hatsingimari, resulting in multiple passengers going missing. The ill-fated engine-fitted boat was en route from Kaliralga ghat in Hatsingimari to Nepuralga Char when the tragic incident unfolded in the middle of the river.
Preliminary reports from local authorities suggest that the boat was carrying numerous passengers along with various items. Abruptly and without warning, the boat capsized, plunging its occupants and the cargo into the turbulent waters of the Brahmaputra.
In a rare glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy, a child named Samen Mondal was rescued in critical condition by local residents who participated in the subsequent rescue operation. Regrettably, despite efforts to save him, the child succumbed and died shortly after being rescued.
Among the missing are Ismail Hussain, Kubad Hussain, and several other passengers. Both Ismail Hussain and Kubad Hussain are elderly individuals, heightening concerns for their safety and well-being.
Efforts by the police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to reach the accident site and conduct search and rescue operations have been hindered by a heavy storm in the Brahmaputra, adding to the challenges faced by the rescue teams.
Reportedly, two dead bodies have been recovered in Bangladesh, awaiting official confirmation and identification.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the South Salmara-Mankachar district, sparking widespread concern among residents and officials alike.
The South Salmara-Mankachar district administration has appealed to the public for any information regarding the missing passengers and has assured all possible support to the affected families during this difficult time.
