Government Allocates ₹645 Crores for 10 New Waterways Projects in Assam
Desk Report, March 16, 2024: In a significant move aimed at bolstering water infrastructure in Assam, the Shipping Ministry has given the green light to allocate ₹645 crores towards the development of 10 new waterways projects along the Brahmaputra River.
The announcement, made by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth in the region. These projects, which fall under the Sagarmala programme, will receive full financial backing from the Central Government.
From the construction of slipways in strategic locations to the establishment of passenger terminals across various districts, each initiative is meticulously designed to facilitate smoother transportation and boost regional tourism.
Sonowal emphasized the transformative impact of these projects, stating, “Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, we are tapping into the immense potential of waterways to create alternative, economic transportation avenues.”
With a focus on the development of Northeastern states, including Assam, the government has initiated projects exceeding ₹1,000 crores under the Sagarmala program. These endeavors underscore the government’s dedication to the region’s progress and economic vitality.
Furthermore, efforts to promote river tourism and water sports along the Brahmaputra River are underway, with plans to construct seven tourist jetties at strategic locations.
Sonowal reiterated the government’s commitment to revitalizing water infrastructure, stating, “Under the inspiring leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the Brahmaputra River is on its way to reclaiming its status as a thriving trade route.”
The government’s comprehensive approach includes the expansion of port infrastructure and efforts to boost the share of Inland Water Transport (IWT) to 5% by 2030, signaling a brighter maritime future for India.
Development initiatives such as the Eastern Grid aim to enhance regional integration and trade opportunities with South Asia, unlocking significant economic potential.
With substantial investments already made in waterway development, the government’s efforts have resulted in a notable increase in cargo handled via the Indo Bangladesh Protocol route.
In addition to ongoing projects, transformative initiatives such as the construction of tourist jetties and deployment of Electric Catamarans will further enhance connectivity and tourism infrastructure in the region.
With these endeavors, Assam is poised for remarkable growth and prosperity in its maritime sector, signaling a promising future for the region’s economic development.
