Purnakanta Gogoi, Lakhimpur, January 16, 2024 – On the auspicious first day of Magh, Pithaguri in Lakhimpur witnessed an innovative and positive initiative following the celebration of Magh Bihu and the traditional lighting of Meji (Hayrick).
After Monday’s Meji lighting, a special program unfolded in the Pithaguri area of Lakhimpur today. The Bhogali Meji Mela Committee, known for its distinctive approach, has been lighting diverse Mejis for the past twelve years, and this year was no exception.
Noteworthy for their commitment to sustainability, the Bhogali Meji Mela Samiti organized a unique event featuring Meji structures crafted from waste plastic bottles, discarded polythene, and other materials. The Meji burning ceremony also included representations of endangered dragons and turtles made from straw and reeds.
Despite facing special challenges this time, the organizing committee shared that they have been creating and lighting hundreds of such Mejis with various messages for the past 12 years. However, due to specific inconveniences, approximately 50 Mejis were lit this year.
This celebration not only upholds cultural traditions but also emphasizes environmental awareness and innovation. The incorporation of recycled materials and the symbolic representations in the Meji structures reflect a commendable effort to promote sustainable practices within the festivities.
